I am frequently asked how the NASPP's acronym should be pronounced. Over the years two different pronunciations have emerged. On the west coast, it is most commonly pronounced as a one-syllable word: nasp. On the east coast, however, people commonly pronounce it as a two-syllable word: nasp-pee.
The answer is (drum roll, please)…
C) None of the above
That's right, the NASPP's official stance is that our name isn't an acronym at all, it is an initialism, which is an abbreviation for which you pronounce each letter (like IRS or SEC or DOL).
So the correct pronunciation is: The [don't forget the "the"] en-eh-ess-pee-pee.
But don't worry, we're not pedants about it. Whatever pronunciation you use is fine; we're just happy you are part of our community. To be honest, as a west coaster, I always thought "NASPP" was pronounced as a one-syllable word. I was corrected during my interview for the Executive Director position. Three times.
I hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving! Jenn and I will be back on topic with more substantive blog entries next week.
