Our popular “Meet the Speaker” series, featuring interviews with speakers at the 27th Annual NASPP Conference, is a great way to get to know our many distinguished speakers and find out more about their sessions in advance of the Conference.
For today’s “Meet the Speaker” interview, we feature an interview with Aaron Shapiro of Carver Edison, who will lead the session “ESPP Innovation: Helping Employees Participate.” Here is what Aaron had to say:
NASPP: Why is now a good time think about ESPP participation?
Aaron: More than ever, business leaders are struggling to solve wealth inequality issues for broad based employees. As the cost of living continues to rise nationwide and corporate profits soar, real wage growth remains flat and most rank-and-file employees have missed out on the compensation gains that their higher earnings colleagues have enjoyed.
NASPP: What is one way companies can increase participation in their ESPP?
Aaron: Adding a lookback feature to an existing ESPP is a great way to increase participation while aligning interests with shareholders. With a lookback, employees have more incentive than ever to help grow the company's stock price as much as possible.
NASPP: What is the most innovative approach you've seen to encourage ESPP participation?
Aaron: I'm a little biased, but I think it's what Carver Edison has built with Cashless ParticipationTM.
NASPP: What was the path you took that led you to the field of stock compensation?
Aaron: Like many in our industry, it was a complete accident. I used to be in the institutional investing world, investing on behalf of non-profits (endowments and foundations). Through a chance encounter, I stumbled upon the problem of low ESPP participation. The rest is history...
