For today’s “Meet the Speaker” interview, we feature an interview with Jonathan Ocker of Pillsbury, who will lead the session “Hold ‘Em or Fold ‘Em? Timing Executive Officer Terminations and Severance.” Here is what Jonathan had to say:
NASPP: What is the elevator pitch for your topic?
Jonathan: Knowing when to have an executive officer terminate can help mitigate accounting, tax and Say-on-Pay consequences
NASPP: What is one best practice companies should implement for executive terminations?
Jonathan: Companies should review the timing of executive officer terminations not just on an HR basis but an interdisciplinary basis including tax, legal, finance and IR.
NASPP: When it comes to executive departures, what is the worst that can happen?
Jonathan: If things are done wrong you can have a higher accounting expense, lose a tax deduction and lose the proxy Say-on-Pay vote.
NASPP: If you weren't in stock compensation, what would you be doing?
Jonathan: I would be in HR at a company or in marketing.
